An Introduction to Trauma-Aware & Neurodiversity-Informed Practice
Penny Ruth Willis & Katy Harris
How can we better support clients affected by trauma and neurodivergence? How do our own experiences shape what happens when we work with them?
Join Penny Ruth Willis, psychologist and family therapist, and Katy Harris, family mediator, for a two-hour introductory session exploring both aspects of professional practice.
We’ll consider how trauma and neurodivergence may affect communication, trust, participation and responses in all interactions, from the first meeting to facilitating sensitive and difficult conversations. We’ll discuss practical ways to support clients, including clearer communication, thoughtful pacing, choice and adjustments to the working environment.
We’ll also explore reflexive practice and the self-regulation of practitioners - the interplay between client and professional and how our own trauma, neurodivergence and emotional responses may influence what we notice, how we interpret behaviour and what we bring into the room. That includes recognising the impact of carrying other people’s difficult experiences – the importance of self- and collective care in our work.
The session is for professionals in family law and mediation, as well as other practitioners who work with people affected by trauma or neurodivergence.
